課程概述

David Harvey曾說:「紐約沒有任何不自然之處」,指出了大都市和自然之間相互糾葛的緊密關係,以及一種跨越自然與文化、自然與城市二分的新視野。當代城市不僅沒有遠離自然,還深刻地仰賴和衝擊了廣大的生態系,也努力在實質和象徵上納入自然的元素。無論是公園綠地、河流灘地、林木花草、昆蟲鳥類,以及作為經濟動物、寵物及實驗動物的各類走獸,乃至於水文地勢、氣候、能源和礦產等,各種被賦予「自然」地位、意義和價值的因素,支持著城市的運作,也因為捲入都市過程而不斷變化。

晚近環境主義思潮在地球暖化、臭氧層破洞、污染、沙漠化與去森林化、能源耗竭、農業危機和各種生態災害漸增的趨勢下,普遍獲得重視,並形成了各種減緩生態衝擊的法律、條約和組織,持續發展各種降低生態危害的技術、程序和產品。然而,人類的都市化持續進展,城市文明和生態自然之間的緊張,似乎不斷加劇緊繃。不過,城市乃至於人類文明並未脫離自然,而是交疊糾結在一起。我們需要一個更複雜的都市理論和環境觀點,來掌握這種複雜性,以便更好的理解當前人類社會和城市面臨的處境與危機。換言之,本課程不直接處理綠色城市和可持續城市的政策、規劃與設計議題,而是聚焦於掌握自然與城市之間的複雜關係,以及這種關係所牽涉的社會、政治與經濟過程及文化想像。
 

課程目標
本課程嘗試涵蓋自然、環境及生態與城市之間關係的各種面向,包含了氣候與災害、污染與垃圾處理、動物與植物、水及能源等議題,並探討政治生態學、環境社會學、環境地理學、環境政策等領域的相關概念與研究。

本課程區分為三個部份:(一)在課程概論之後,探討「自然」與「文化」或「社會」之間關係的理論取向、重要概念和爭辯,以環境地理學、政治生態學和環境社會學為主要領域;(二)自然與城市關係的特殊議題,例如:環境治理政策、能量、污染與廢棄物、災害、水、動物、植物、公園與都市農業等;(三)從自然生態角度探討城市發展歷程,亦即城市的生態史或自然史寫作。 
課程要求
■課程要求:
盡力閱讀課程材料,勇於發問,勤於出席。修習者的投入與表現,對本課程能否順利運作非常重要。本課程採取講演和討論課(seminar)並行方式,每次上課由教師講授和提示重點,並由參與者分配導讀該週的閱讀材料,每篇文章報告時間,必須控制於十五分鐘,盡量留時間發問和討論,探討能跟理論概念對話的經驗議題。報告者必須分發書面提要(必須包含三百字以內之摘述,主要論點和論證邏輯之說明【配合論證圖示】,以及評論和問題)。
沒有分配到當週閱讀材料導讀的同學,則需繳交針對某一篇或全部閱讀材料的讀書心得和提問,至少一頁。旁聽的同學不需要分配每周閱讀材料導讀,但必須每堂課繳交當週閱讀材料的讀書心得和提問。
本課程的設計份量,需要修課者在課堂外花費四倍以上的時間,也就是3 X 4=12個小時,包括閱讀教材、與同學討論、撰寫摘要或讀書心得及提問的時間。
■摘要寫作要點:
書面摘要必須於首頁列明報告文獻(APA格式)、日期、報告人,先有三百字摘要,述明整篇文章的問題意識和主要論點。然後是經過消化的、條理分明的內容概述。換言之,不宜逐段摘譯,最好是整理出文中討論的主要問題,以及作者對這些問題的回答或爭辯,建議以圖表方式整理出主要的論證架構,也可以搭配一些圖片,譬如說作者照片、書影或文中提到的人物和事件圖片。如果直接引述文中語句或段落,必須以不同字體清楚標示,並加註頁碼。最後,必須針對文獻內容提出問題,或是可供延伸討論的經驗議題。

期末報告:運用本學期提到的觀念和議題,撰寫針對自然與城市之關係的經驗研究論文一篇。學期中先繳交計畫書三頁以內(8%),此後分兩階段繳交研究成果,期末報告初稿經教師批改後,於期末繳交完整論文,規格和排版必須符合學術要求,可參照《台灣社會學刊》或《台灣社會學》的格式。完稿必須包含中英文題目、中文摘要和關鍵詞等項目,字數以一萬五千字至兩萬字為度。初稿佔12%,完稿佔10%。期末作業可以是兩篇平時作業的整合和延伸。最後一週上課時,修課同學需準備簡報檔,於課堂上發表期末報告成果。合計佔30%。

「如何改善城市自然與人的關係」構想書:選擇一個你認為是自然的主題或因素,描述其目前與人類活動之間的關係,以及說明這種關係有什麼問題。然後,針對你所辨認出來的問題,提出可能的改善之道。本作業可以同「城市的自然如何與人互動」調查報告採用相同的主題,約四千字,佔15%。

「城市的自然如何與人互動」調查報告:選擇一個你認為是自然的主題,針對特定城市的特定範圍(大小不拘),調查和記錄該自然主題或元素與人類之間的互動關係及重要事件(例如,某社區的貓犬和居民的關係,某個河濱地區的人和水的關係、或是颱風與城市特定地方的關係等),需搭配地圖和照片,約四千字,佔15%。
